Decorating Your Home For Fall on the Cheap

With the change of seasons, many people like to change their home decor.  I'm not talking about just bringing out a few seasonal decorations (which is what I usually do), I'm talking about a whole new look to the living room.  Transitioning from a light and airy summer look, to a warm and cozy fall look doesn't have to cost a fortune.  The change can be done by swapping out a few things such as curtains, pillows, throws, and the accent decorations you have on your tables, bookshelves and mantles.  I'm always looking to save money so I try to buy second hand when I can.  Yard sale and thrift stores are great places to find seasonal decor.  

In my area there are 8 thrift stores within about a 30 minute drive from each other.  For all you local folks, here's a link to an article that tells a little about each one HERE. That's a lot of places to find good deals.  Some stores like Goodwill, get new items (usually overstocks) from Target.  You never know what you'll find and just like regular retail shops, they also stock their shelves seasonally and get in new items all the time.

Recently I got two new blackout curtains.  They are the Threshold brand from Target.  They were marked $9.99 each but I got them even cheaper because of a 50% off sale.  Most stores have some sort of sale going on each day.  You just need to check what color tickets are discounted when you walk in and you can score pretty good deals, as if shopping second hand wasn't cheap enough.

I love autumnal colors and a few rooms in my house are decorated in these warm colors already including my bedroom.  I used to have off white curtains in there which matched the bedding but did little to block out the light.  I love these warmer colored curtains and the light blocking feature is amazing.  Now if only I had the time to sleep in.

One of the thrift stores even has a blog you can check out HERE.  It gives ideas about decorating and such.  This cute little wreath would make a great front door decoration for fall.



Besides shopping thrift stores, I love to yard sale.  I found this wreath for FREE last week and hung it up on my wreath hanger outside.  On the other side of the door is a fake pumpkin my mom was getting rid of.  I've had several people think that pumpkin is real and compliment me on my pumpkin carving skills.  

I'm still working on decorating my front porch.  I need to add some mums to those flower pots and then I'll call it done.

Antiques and vintage decor and a nice warm and cozy feel to any home.  If you want to add some antiques into your fall decor, you can find them at thrift stores but you might want to check out antique stores as well.  There are lots of antique stores in Bucks Co. PA and THIS articles lists them all along with other favorite antique shops all over the US and tips for finding antiques in any state.

Vintage Industrial Boutonniere

My sister got married on Friday!!!!  I'm so happy for her and just look at how cute she and her new husband look: 

 

I've already blogged about her beautiful Vintage Themed Bridal Shower, in case you missed that you can check it out HERE.

This vintage theme was carried over into the wedding and reception decor.  My sister looked stunning in her gown with vintage looking bead work and an old Hollywood glam inspired cage in her hair.  The event, venue, decor, everything was gorgeous beyond description.  There were so many little details that truly reflected the style and personality of my sister and her husband.   Take the guys' boutonnières.  Traditionally the groomsmen wear flowers as boutonnières.   Not these men.  The groom himself designed these boutonnières using gear parts.  And each one was unique.   How awesome is that!

Vintage Home Tour (part 2)

For part 1 of this home tour, click HERE.  I took so many pictures of this charming house I decided to spread it out rather than do one giant post.  In the previous post I showed you the main floor of the house which included the living rooms, dining rooms, and sun room.  I'm back today to show off the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom.  I took all of these pictures during my sister's Vintage Themed Bridal Shower.  The shower was held at her friend's house.  The house is a historical home by the way and decorated so cute, that I just couldn't help myself in taking so many pictures.  OK, OK, enough chit chat, one with the tour....

On this little wall between the dining room and the way to the kitchen, were these cool pictures.  The frames are antiqued mirrors and the pictures themselves looked like aged black and white photographs.  I was really digging those frames.

Between the dining room and kitchen was this little butler's pantry, I guess that's what it's called?  It was a great place to set up drinks for the party.

Vintage Home Tour (part 1)

Back when I posted about my sister's Vintage Bridal Shower, I said the house looked like something out of a magazine.  Well, I'll let you be the judge of that.  I took so many pictures of that charming historical home, I'll take you on a virtual tour.

From the outside there are these huge plants.  That's my 9 yr old in the picture just to give you an idea of just how huge those leaves are.  It's a charming little home in an established neighborhood.

Let's walk up to the front porch and go inside shall we?

Vintage Bridal Shower

My sister is getting married!   Earlier this month we had a surprise bridal shower for her.  It was held at one of her friend's houses and it was beautiful.  The decorations, food and home decor were stunning.  It truly was like something out of a magazine.  It was the most beautiful bridal shower (or any party for that matter) that I've ever been too.

The house is a historic home with antique charm.  Every room was tastefully decorated with antiques and vintage collections.  The bridal shower decorations were simple and fun.  Using cookie cutters, our host cut out the dress shapes and strung them up with blue ribbon around the fireplaces and other areas of the house.
