Hide That Box Spring

Today's quick and easy post is sponsored by my son's bedroom.

You see, his mattress sits on top of a box spring.  His sheets are white but the box spring is a pastel peachy color.  Not the look we are going for in his masculine Minecraft bedroom.  

Lucky for me I had an extra white fitted sheet.  I used that to cover the box spring and now it looks so much better.  See for yourself in the before and after shot below:

You can always make the bed so the box spring doesn't show, but he likes to have his comforter folded over at the top so the pillows show and that leaves the box spring exposed.  No more naked box spring here.  Now the bed has a more finished look to it.

It's been almost a year since I switched up the bedrooms and gave my son's a Minecraft makeover.  I still owe you the details about that.  One of these days I'll get around to it, for now here's a sneak peak.

Minecraft Creeper Sign and Minecraft Font

The last few posts have been about some sewing projects I made for the baby.  The next couple will be the painting projects I mentioned I was working on.  

First up is a Minecraft Creeper sign for my son's Minecraft room.  I know, one of these days I'll get around to taking pictures of his Minecraft room and share all the details.

I got the inspiration from HERE.  It was super easy to make.  I used some scrap wood and cut it to the desired length, my son painted it and I added the vinyl lettering.  To make sure the letters didn't fall off (anyone else have problems with their vinyl coming off?), I put a layer of Mod Podge on top.  

As for how I got the Minecraft font, I found a Minecraft Font online at:

I followed the instructions found at:

and downloaded it to my computer so I could use it with my Silhouette machine.

For the creeper face, I found the image online, and saved it to my computer so I could use it with my Silhouette program.

MINECRAFT Canvas Art

The week before Christmas, we celebrated my son's 12th birthday with a Minecraft themed party.  In case you missed that post, you can check it out HERE.  I showed a picture of the Minecraft canvases I made and I'm back today to show you how I did it.

I made three canvases:  Creeper, Enderman, and TNT

The materials I used were:

canvases

paints

vinyl

painter's tape

paper cutter

Mod Podge

I used 12 x 12 sized canvases.  I had picked up a pack of 7 at a yard sale for $1. 

I also bought some craft paint for $1 or less per bottle.  The colors I used were black, white, green, red and light purple.

I used some black vinyl, the kind you'd use for a Silhouette machine.  Using a paper cutter, I cut the vinyl to the desired size square or rectangle.

CREEPER

To make the creeper, I painted the entire canvas green.  It took 3 coats to get good, solid coverage.

Once that was dry, I added the vinyl. I cute large squares for the eyes, and rectangles for the nose/mouth.  To make sure the vinyl stayed on, I put a layer of Mod Podge over top.

TNT

I sectioned off the canvas into three equal parts using painters tape, and painted the top and bottom red.  I cut vinyl into rectangles and squares to form the letters.  After applying the vinyl, I brushed on some Mod Podge to keep it all in place.

ENDERMAN

I painted the entire canvas black.  Once that was dry, I taped off the eyes and painted them white.  Once the white was dry, I again taped off the eyes and painted the middles purple.

All three canvas are attached to the wall using Command Stripes.

We are getting closer to completing his Minecraft themed room.  All we need is a desk and rug, then I'll do the room reveal.

Minecraft Birthday Party

The week before Christmas, my oldest son turned 12.  He's into all things Minecraft so it came as no surprise that he wanted a Minecraft birthday party.  

This party was pretty easy to do since I didn't have to plan any games.  They'd just be playing Minecraft when they weren't eating or opening presents.     

My son wanted a Minecraft cake.  Not a cake that looked like a creeper or other Minecraft object, but a cake that looks like the cake in the game.  I did my best and he loved it.  I  baked a spice cake in two square cake pans and used cream cheese icing for the middle and top.  To create the red squares on top, I used wax paper with square cut outs as a stencil.  I had to let the icing harden so the wax paper wouldn't stick to it.  Then I used some red food spray (the same kind I used for the Babe's ladybug birthday party) to spray on the squares.

We also had dirt with grass on top.  Basically this was a rice krispie treat with green icing on top.  I used both chocolate and regular rice krispies (generic brand works fine too) to make the rice krispie treats.

Pretzel sticks made great torches and red and black Twizzlers were arranged to create TNT.

Being so close to Christmas when we had this party, I had a hard time finding green party supplies.  I used a green tablecloth, black napkins and clear cups (I really wanted green, but as you can see it still worked out, I made little creeper faces on them and labeled them with the kids' names)

For the drinks we had water and lemonade dyed to match the colors of various potions in Minecraft. My son was insistent that I get the coloring right so he had the potion on the screen as I added the food coloring.  I also did a creeper pizza, but that didn't turn out so well.  I had my husband buy the pizza and forgot to tell him to get plain cheese so he got meat lovers instead.  I did try to make a creeper face with the ham pieces but it would have looked better if it was a plain cheese pizza and the creeper face was made out of pepperoni cut into squares.  Oh well, no one minded.

As for the party favors, I found green treat bags and butter mints in green wrappers.  I used a black Sharpie to create a creeper face on them.  I added some other non Minecraft things into the treat bags too.

Some of the gifts were Minecraft themed as well.  He got this "Periodic Table of Minecraft" shirt, and the Minecraft canvases that I made for his new Minecraft themed room.  (Tutorial of the canvases and a room reveal coming soon).

And of course the kids had fun playing Minecraft. 

He also got this hand crafted Minecraft stocking from my sister in law, not for his birthday but for Christmas.  I thought that was so clever.

All in all, it was a fun party and very low key for me which was great.
